Hamworthy Harriers Newsletter December 2018 - Season’s Greetings

As 2018 drew to a close, December saw the Hamworthy Harriers still out racing at local events.

Mike Hirst and Rufus had a great result at the Maverick Silva Dark Series middle 10K, placing 2nd overall and 1st Canicross team in a time of 45:32. Pretty good going for a trail run in the dark!

Mike Hirst and Sarah Chaloner both raced in the County Cross Country Championship at Bryanston School. Mike had his quickest run of the cross country season, possibly spurred on by the heavy rain that accompanied the men’s race. The ladies were luckier with the weather and Sarah had a good run but was just beaten into 2nd place in the V50 category.

On Boxing Day, conditions were ideal for quick times at the Round the Lakes 10K in Poole Park. Rebecca Collins and Sarah Chaloner both ran season’s bests of 51:39 (Rebecca) and 43:19 (Sarah). Well done to both.

Hamworthy Harriers also participated in parkruns throughout December, including Poole parkrun on Christmas Day which attracted 974 participants, a new attendance record. The results (first claim members only) are:-

The annual draw for the club London Marathon entry was held during December and Mike Hughes was successful in securing a place in the race in 2019. The hard work starts now for Mike and we all wish him well with his training and race preparation.

Moving on to more social activities, the Hamworthy Harriers’ pre-Christmas run and social evening took place on Monday 17th December in Wimborne. Seven runners assembled in the Square and after posing for photos beneath the Christmas tree, enjoyed a steady run around the town. The post-run food and drinks in the King’s Head was very well supported by 19 Harriers, family and friends. The evening had been painstakingly organised by Ian Edwards and his hard work resulted in the Harriers being comfortably seated in their own area and the perfectly timed arrival of the food. Many thanks to Ian for his hard work and also to the staff at the King’s Head who provided excellent service.

Forthcoming dates for the diary in January and February are the Hamworthy Harriers AGM at 2000 hours on Monday 21st January 2019 at the Hamworthy Club and the Annual Awards meal and presentation on Saturday 16th February 2019 (venue and further details to be announced shortly).

That’s about it for 2018, except to wish all the Hamworthy Harriers a very happy New Year.
