March 2019 – Spring is in the air

Spring (and love) was in the air in March which, although it escaped the snow of 2018, was notably for its persistently strong winds.

Indeed, the Hamworthy Harriers had to battle a strong headwind at the Larmer 10 on Saturday 9th March. As if that didn’t make things tough enough, there was also a new hill on the already hilly and over-distance route. There were good club performances all round and the results were:-

Katherine Pike 1:53:12

Jeannette Pike 2:02:55

Michael Hughes 2:04:49

Carol Baker 2:11:24

The race was the 3rd and final race in the Imperial Series and Carol Baker was delighted to be announced as the female over 60 series winner. Very well done Carol.

March is a popular time of year for warm weather training and Ian Edwards and Sarah Chaloner made the most of a warm and sunny week in the Algarve. The annual hotly contested Falesia 5K race was held on Tuesday 19th March and Sarah finished in 22:14 which placed her 2nd in her age category.

In other international news, Mike Hirst (without his faithful race partner Rufus) ran the Roma Pineto parkrun in Rome on 23rd March. Mike completed the 2 lap off road route in 21:36 and was the 6th finisher. The parkrunners were well rewarded afterwards for their efforts with cake and prosecco.

Andy Clements is currently further afield on his antipodean travels, and has already managed to bump into ex-pat Hamworthy Harrier Mark Caldecourt. Look out for April’s newsletter to find out how Andy got on at an Aussie parkrun on 6th April.

Last but not least, Saturday 16th March was Terri Lewis and John McClelland’s big day when they got married in the company of family and friends at Wimborne Town Hall, followed by a reception at The King’s Head Hotel. Congratulations to Mr & Mrs McClelland. (Photo by Russell Long).

Diary dates for April 2019 are the Harriers Bluebell run and walk on Easter Monday, 22nd April, 1800 hours starting at The Vine Inn, Pamphill and the London Marathon on Sunday 28th April. Good luck to Jeannette Pike, Carol Baker and Michael Hughes.

Happy running, Harriers.
